Uptown Food Truck Fair

A few weekends ago my friend Lauren and I went to the Uptown Food Truck Fair and had a blast! It has been something I’ve wanted to do for a while now and was very excited that it worked out this year. For 20$ each Lauren and I got admission to the fair and 3 drink tickets a piece. There were around 60 different trucks at the fair that day and it was very difficult to choose where to go.

The place was packed and it was really hot so Lauren and I decided to try the trucks with the shortest lines. We also tried to avoid places that had their own restaurant figuring that we could try their food any time, we wanted something that was exclusive to food trucks. To get the most bang for our buck Lauren and I decided to order only one thing from each truck and split it so we could try more things before getting full! I loved the vibe throughout the fair everyone was excited and having fun. There was a DJ booth playing great music and live music later on in the evening. Lauren and I also tried our hand at a game of bags (aka cornhole), which I obviously won… We had so much fun and the food was to die for.IMG_6536

The trucks we went to were:

Falafel King: This was my favorite visit of the day! I had never had a gyro before.BtPUUBcIUAA2DCH After eating the Falafel King’s gyro it’s all I ever want, breakfast-lunch-dinner it doesn’t matter. I later found out that the do in fact have a restaurant in uptown and I couldn’t be more pleased that I can get their mouthwatering gyros whenever I want!

Brava: After walking around the fair a few times to see our options th Pulled Steak Sandwich caught our eye on the Brava menu. Served on a Pretzel Bun with Pepper Jack Cheese it was ok. The steak was surprisingly sweet tasting and took me off guard, I wasn’t a huge fan but Lauren loved it.

After finishing our pulled steak sandwich some nasty looking storm clouds began to roll in so Lauren and I decided to take a break and head over to Stella’s for a few drinks and let our food settle and wait out the approaching storm.

A few drinks and a very gusty rain storm later we headed back towards the fair ready for round two. On our way in we purchased the lanyard style drink holders (most genius thing I had seen all day!) To help free up our hands. The added perk to these is that they will allow us to get in future food truck fairs at a discounted price.

Chef ShaIMG_6539ck:  This was a very close second for the favorite spot of the day. The Pulled Pork Nachos at Chef Shack were A.MAZ.ING! With salty corn chips, black beans and creamy guac. I will definitely have to keep an eye out for this truck in the future and snag these nachos again.

Fro Yo Soul: I was really underwhelmed with the Fro Yo Soul truck. The line was killer (not their fault I know) and this really was just one of those trendy frozen yogurt shops that you see on every corner just in food truck form. 11666048_835936836484352_7885665863657583611_nLauren and I both had a sweet tooth and I had eyeballed a Key Lime Frozen Yogurt on their menu earlier in the day and couldn’t wait to try it. I ended up only eating a few bites and ended up tossing it. It was incredibly sour, I know it was a lime flavored frozen yogurt so maybe it was just poor judgement on my part. I was expecting something a little creamier and sweeter with a nice limey tang to it, just like real key lime pie (one of my faves). I would be willing to give this a try in the future and just try a run of the mill flavor and play it safe.

I had so much fun at the Uptown Food Truck Fair, my only regret is not being able to try more! There is another Food Truck Fair coming up in Saint Paul on July 25th from 11am-9pm and in Burnsville on September 9th from 11am-9pm. For more information and a listing of the food trucks check out the MN Food Truck Fair website.IMG_6541
